You need plenty of luck to make it onto an AFL list.

And Cats recruit Jamaine Jones enjoyed a large slice of it in May when he received a late call-up for the Hampden Football League's representative clash against the powerful Ovens and Murray league.

The Hampden side was well beaten, but Jones had a blinder, kicking three goals and taking home the Richard Nixon Medal after being judged his team's best player.

The performance caught the eye of many people at Warrnambool's Reid Oval that day, including Geelong's recruiting boss Stephen Wells.

Now the speedy and hard-tackling half-forward finds himself on the Cats' list after being selected by Wells with pick 48 in the recent rookie draft.

"It was an unreal moment when my name got called out," Jones said after his first training session at Simonds Stadium.

"So I'm still trying to get my head around it."
